National Bar Association Denounces White House Policy Targeting Legal Professionals

The National Bar Association (NBA) firmly opposes and condemns the recent memorandum issued by the White House to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. The directive calls on the Department of Justice to impose sanctions on attorneys and law firms representing clients in litigation against the federal government that the Trump administration considers “unreasonable” or “frivolous.”

It is with great reverence and reflection that I write to you today from Selma, Alabama, where we gathered to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday—a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement that forever changed the course of history. As President of the National BarAssociation (“NBA”), I felt it was not only necessary but imperative to be here, to honor the courage and sacrifices of those who marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on March 7, 1965, in pursuit of justice and the fundamental right to vote.

The National Bar Association (“NBA”) unequivocally condemns the Trump administration’s continued attacks on the press and judiciary and its recent actions weaponizing the government to attack the President’s “enemies” list. The President’s administration is now targeting Covington & Burling, LLP, the law firm that represented former Special Counsel Jack Smith, by rescinding contracts with the firm and revoking security clearances for attorneys who assisted Jack Smith.
