BELLAMY RECEIVES NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION PRESIDENTIAL AWARD

The
National Bar Association (NBA) honored Everett Bellamy with
a prestigious Presidential Award. The award was presented
to Bellamy at the NBA Annual Heman Marion Sweat Luncheon
which was held during the Association's 24th Annual Mid-Year
Conference in Washington DC. The Sweat Luncheon was named
in memory of Heman Sweat who sued the state of Texas after
being denied admission into the then segregated University
of Texas Law School because of his race. Sweatt's vigilance
lead to the creation of several now historically black law
school in Texas through an effort to avoid integrationist.
Sweatt prevailed at the United States Supreme Court and
was amongst the first blacks to attend integrated law classes
at the University of Texas.

"Bellamy
is a well deserving honoree," said NBA Executive Director
John Crump. "His commitment to legal education is exceptional."
Bellamy has been an associate dean at Georgetown University
Law Center since 1980. He has been an honest and caring
advisor and mentor to many current and prospective law students.
Bellamy is cofounder and a director in the Charles Hamilton
Houston Preparatory Law Institute, a non-profit summer pre-law
institute that prepares students of color for law school.
He has also taught in numerous other summer law programs
and institute, including the Council on Legal Education
Opportunity (CLEO). Bellamy is past chair of the NBA Law
Professors Division, member of the NBA Board of Governors,
and a member of the NBA Magazine Editorial Board.

The
award was presented by NBA President Clyde E Bailey, Sr.
and Donald Temple, Esq. Only one other award was presented
which went to Dr. Foretta Dukes McKenzie, former superintendent
of the District of Columbia Public Schools and currently
chair and CEO of The McKenzie Group, Inc., a comprehensive
educational consulting firm.
The
National Bar Association was founded in 1925 and is the
oldest and largest bar association of people of color in
the world. It has 88 affiliate chapters and represents over
20,000 African American lawyers, judges and law students
throughout the world.
