Monroe
County Legal Assistance Center (MCLAC), a division of Legal Assistance
of Western New York (LAWNY), has an immediate opening for a Staff
Attorney at its office located in downtown Rochester, New York.
MCLAC is funded, in part, by the Legal Services Corporation and
provides free legal services to low-income families and individuals
and to discrimination victims or elderly persons regardless of
income. MCLAC provides legal help and direct representation primarily
in the practice areas of fair housing enforcement, eviction prevention,
public benefits, and elder law. MCLAC's current 18-member staff
includes attorneys, paralegals, a social worker, and a legal support
team. Our staff works closely across areas of specialization to
bring a holistic approach to addressing law related issues affecting
our clients and their communities.
MCLAC's
Fair Housing Enforcement Project investigates complaints of violations
of the Fair Housing Laws and files enforcement actions primarily
on behalf of victims who have been discriminated against either
while seeking rental housing or while residing in rental housing.
The Project trains and deploys testers to verify suspected occurrences
of housing discrimination in rental transactions. Project attorneys
file cases in Federal District Court as appropriate to maximize
the effectiveness of enforcement and to deter discriminatory conduct
throughout the community. In 2005 a Project attorney received
the New York State Bar Association Haywood Burns Award for excellence
in the practice of civil rights law. The Project has obtained
numerous successful court settlements or verdicts for instances
of racial, national origin, disability, and familial status discrimination.
The Project is based in Monroe County (Rochester) and also covers
predominantly rural counties in the LAWNY region through Legal
Assistance of the Finger Lakes, a LAWNY office located in Geneva,
New York.
The
successful candidate will be assigned to provide high quality
legal services required to investigate and prosecute cases on
behalf of housing discrimination victims in Federal District Court.
Additionally, the Staff Attorney may be assigned some housing
and public benefits cases that do not involve the Fair Housing
Laws and that arise within the state court jurisdiction. Advocacy
tasks will include investigation, legal research and writing,
taking depositions, other discovery practice, motion practice,
negotiation, and trial practice including jury trials. The Staff
Attorney will report to the Project Supervising Attorney and work
closely with other Project staff, including the Test Coordinator
and the Communications and Outreach Coordinator. In addition to
legal duties, the Staff Attorney will participate in public awareness
initiatives to promote fair housing and encourage reporting of
discrimination, through community outreach, training events, and
media appearances. Applicants must be licensed to practice law
in the State of New York or qualified to be admitted by waiver
and will be required to obtain admission to U.S. District Court.
Applicants
must have excellent legal advocacy and communication skills, and
be able to respond with a high degree of professionalism to the
pressures of litigation. Most importantly, applicants must demonstrate
strong commitment to civil rights and to protecting the rights
of poor people. Fluency in Spanish is a benefit to the position
but is not required. The beginning salary is up to $37,289.00,

MCLAC salary scale. An excellent health, disability and benefit
package is provided.
